The Internet: A Clear and Present Danger?

I do believe that the examples Cleaver opens her article with are a violation of our civil liberties. One should have the opportunity to get on the internet and use its valuable resources without being concerned about whether or not someone else will tap into their information. Companies should not be allowed to commit fraud just because it is being done through the internet and parents shouldn’t have to live with the fright that their children will be exposed to child predators while merely looking for new friends. The legislation to make these types of activities illegal should definitely be passed. They are laws that would be illegal if occurring in “real” life but just because the internet is a different environment does not mean that it should be legal. The internet, as Cleaver states, is a “medium” were the public is mainly children and we have to consider the public interest. Regulation is required in the internet. The examples Cleaver uses to open her article with were very effective in catching my attention. It makes the reader think about all that could be going on in the internet world. Using the examples and then explaining the issue was a great way to get the reader on her side of the argument.

  1. Victoria, I couldn't agree more with you. It's scary knowing that everytime you go online and enter your info that someone could be watching you, and what's even scarier is that people are coming after kids! What is this world coming to?

  2. I agree with your stance on this subject. The internet is unpredictable. Kids come across ads and pages that they should have never been able to see. It would be great if the internet could be filtered of these problems but that would create an uproar from different people believing in free speech to its fullest.

  3. I couldn't agree with you more. I feel like she opened the article with some very good points on how we should have better protection on the internet and how better laws should come into effect. This is a very serious subject and i think it should be delt with better...:)

  4. I completely agree with what you said. The internet today is used by many people and we shouldn't be worried about our identity being lost or people getting our personal information. I liked the way Cleaver started her article as well, grabbing my attention and making me think. The way the article started with examples on ways people are hacking into the internet made me think that someone could be doing the same to me when I am on the internet. Better laws on the internet and the violation of our civil liberties are a subject that is worth being talked about and changed. Hopefully very soon it will be fixed.

  5. I couldn't agree with you more, the internet is a scary place and it's even scarier to think that ANYBODY can go on and basically look at what you're doing. Making the internet illegal wouldn't solve anything though, we just need to be more careful as internet users. With no internet, it would be so much harder to do everything because our society has become so accustomed to it!
